Injured Cockatoo Rescued

By Veteran-arian at 05/11/09 08:57

The title may sound like it's an article for a big bird rescued by animal organizations and is reported by Reuters or AP but actually, it's just a story of my sister rescuing a small cockatoo. Well, all happened like a week ago in front of our parents house.

We have a small orchidarium in our parents' house. It's a small unit of land with wooden branches with orchids on it and is covered with finely knitted nets to protect the flowers from bug infestation or being eaten by birds in the area.

One morning while she was sweeping the garden she noticed the netted roof of the orchidarium moved. So she checked it and noticed something wiggling. She didn't think it was a bird because usually birds in the area immediately flies when someone approaches.

Near enough, she learned it was indeed a bird. And not just an ordinary bird in the vicinity mainly consist of local robin and maya. It was beautiful with a plumage in pure white and yellowish crest. She called for my brother's help to get it. Then they learned it was some kind of a crested cockatoo.

They brought it to the nearby veterinarian because it has an injury in its wings, probably the reason why it crash landed. They had it checked and examined and learned that the bird's wound is from a missed airgun shot. There they found out it's an Australian Sulphur-crested Cackatoo.

The veterinarian also said it probably fled from its owners because a sulphur crested cockatoo is not part of the local fauna. It may have been imported from other countries. Legally of illegally, we may never know. But the animal doctor said it sure is not at home to its owners yet, or maybe they have just acquired it,when it escaped, as cockatoos are known as loyal pets as long as you have already earned its loyalty.

My sister named the cockatoo Crissy. It was a female.
