What inspired you to launch your own website?
Before I bought my first Rottweiler I had Doberman pinchers for about 15 years with my parents at first. Once I had my first Rottweiler, he over took my life. I was training SchutzHund (German dog sport), I was showing him in the AKC ring, USRC ring, and the ARV ring. I bought my first German import Quinta (she was my foundation bitch for my kennel lines). As time progressed I had more and more Rottweilers, and wanted to have a litter of puppies for my kennel line. I soon found people wanting my puppies from all over the country, because they seen my dogs in shows (I showed all over the US). People wanted pictures, and information on the parents. so it became apparent I needed to get that information on the web so people could easily access it. I never new that one day my puppies would be sold all over the world as they are today.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
I first started my web site about 1991, it was small just a couple of pages, then as my kennel grew so did my web site. it was my Rottweiler kennel originally called Vom Gruver Haus Rottweiler, but in 2007 I changed it to the correct German grammar Vom Hause Gruver Rottweilers, which means from hause Gruver in German
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I used my kennel name
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
I do a lot of research on my lines, and do line breedings on certain dogs. I have shown, and worked my own dogs as well as helping other people train their dogs, not a lot of people can say that. My kennel line is a consistaint producer, I know how they will turn out when they become adults. A lot of breeders don't even have a kennel line, I'm in my fouth generation now with my kennel lines.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I want to become well known around the world for having excellent German bred Rottweiler puppies, and to be know for having a great relationship with my customers, word of mouth does a business great. You can't stay in this business for very long if you don't treat your customers well.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
This is my business, so all my time, and a lot of money go into it. Like with any good business it takes time. keep striving to get better and better.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I really wouldn't change anything, maybe just spend more on advertising.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I only have a couple litters a year, so if demand went up I would have people on a waiting list as sometimes this happens already.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
This past year was tough. I had a female that only had one puppy. another female that had three puppies, I had to take one of my dogs for an emergency c-section. and another one had to have surgery done.
What has been your biggest challenge?
getting higher ranking with my web site.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
having an SEO company work on my web site for six months, it was very expensive, but it did get results.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Never knew making your web site search engine friendly was so time consuming.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
I have run it since day one, and will keep it up and running as long as I have my kennel, which I plan to have for a very long time.
Something that I don't like about linking we sites
I don't like it when you can put a link on your web site from another we site with there banner and information on it, but they want to charge you to put a link on their site. I understand that this is one way for them to make money, but if putting a link on my site for free from them I shouldn't have to pay for one on their site.
