I was watching an old clip from a segment of a Philippine television program "Pakita Mo Pet Mo" or Show Your Pet in ABSCBN's now defunct show Magandang Tanghali Bayan (roughly translated as Good [after]Noon Everyone). I had fun watching the great magician Lou Hilario and his birds. But this time he did not showcased his magic abilities. It was a pet contest that was won by Lou. It aims to showcase talented pets and creative pet owners. Here's the clip.I was amazed at how talented his pet parrot Mira was. He started training his bird starting at 6 months and during that contest Mira was already 4 years old. What a very talented parrot.
Lou owns a couple of other birds and mostly consist of birds from the parrot family. He has glossy blue cockatoos, parakeets and lorikeets. Parrots are considered to be the most intelligent birds of all, arguably even more intelligent than dogs.
It is said that dogs can only see black and white while birds can see things in full colors. Studies also shows that the lower part of a parrot's brain resemble that of humans, giving them the advantage of learning things easier.
They are also a prominent talker. Parrots have the ability to mimic human voices. However, research found out that they do not only mimic the voice they hear, they can also incorporate that and give meaning in their own interpretation.
For a bird, parrots are considered as one of the few who can live for more than 50 years. Average lifespan of a large parrot is 80 years but reports and other evidences are found that says they can live for more than a hundred years. But smaller parrots like those lovebirds only have a 15-20 years of lifespan.
But the most feature of a parrot is its color. They have vibrant colors that is soothing to the eye. It's like they are the embodiment of Brazil's Mardi Gras with their colors. Quetzals are beautiful, but parrots are more than just beautiful.
