Is there anything that can be used to deter or eliminate the gnats that tend to swarm the food dish? I had thought about buying a frog or toad, but was told that the iguana would most likely think it was a toy and kill it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, gnats love fruits and vegetables and that's what iguanas eat, so I'm not quit sure what the best thing to do is. What I would do is make sure that your are changing the iguana's food regularly and try not to let the food sit there to long.
Also get some flying insect spray and spray that around the cage. Make sure you check the label to make sure it is ok for your pet though.
