Well if it snows in your place, I am sure that you are aware that salt is spread out on the roads because they easily melt down that way. This also works to keep the roadways and walkways from freezing further.
What we all don't know is that chemists don't traditionally use table salts. This thread on DogForum.org has a list of the kinds of salts that chemists use in the roadways. You should better cover the feet of your pets when walking them in public places to avoid getting any of these chemicals.
