Pet stores are a popular place to shop for young puppies and other pets of your choice. There is a pet store in practically every city. It is hard to resist that cute puppy caged up and desperately waiting to be taken home. But before you make this decision, you should know a little bit of insider information about pet stores and the origins of the puppies they sell.
Have you ever heard of puppy mills?
Do you know where most of these puppies being sold in pet stores come from? There are certain dog breeding centers catering to high volume puppy production and sell the pups to pet stores, where they are then is sold to you. These places are called "puppy mills", and are probably the most disgusting dog breeding practices that I have seen.
Disclaimer: Let me be clear on one thing: Not all pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills, but research has been done and the findings are that a large majority of pet stores in the United States do use puppy mills as a resource for pets to sell to the public.
What exactly are puppy mills? In simple terms, a puppy mill is a farm, found most often in the Midwestern part of the United States, that breed animals for profits, mostly dogs. That may not sound harsh, but imagine these puppies being bred in high volumes and then treated in the same way that cattle or chickens are.
If that vision doesn't disturb you, then imagine cages stacked upon cages containg these small adorable puppies, all suffering and ignored. Picture rows and rows of these dog filled cages, coupled with minimal human contact. The only care they are getting is enough food and water to survive. You can find pictures by doing research online which would absolutely break your heart.
What is wrong with buying a puppy that originated from a puppy mill?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying one of these puppies, and it is definitely a positive choice to make. On the other hand, many of these dogs may have what is called "early stress syndrome". They may grow up to be nervous and frightened dogs, in which it is very hard to instill confidence with training. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule with puppy mill puppies. However, before you spend your hard-earned cash, be sure you know all there is to know about where your puppy came from when considering purchasing from a pet store.

Shelby maybe you should shut your mouth!! Anyone that thinks "not all puppy mills are bad" are full of ! Puppy mills should be shut down as a whole. People that run puppy mills should be shut down and be forced to get a "real job". Dogs are domesticated animals and should not be used to be breed over, and over again. If that makes me a racist then so be it!! SO YEAH BACK TO YA!!!!! Comment #3 Joanna at 07/24/09 17:34
First off there is a differece between puppy mills and reputable breeders, so be sure that you know the difference before you start defending one or the other please. Puppy mills are the places that put the value of a dollar over the value of a life.As far as the statement "nothing wrong with buying one of these puppies", say that to anyone that has brought their new pet home to find that it is very ill due to poor breeding and/or living conditions. How about the fact that if we allow a demand for these pet store puppies the 'bad' mills will be the ones to profit, because they are the ones able to produce so many puppies for such low cost (because they spend so little on the care of the dogs). So there can be harm buying that puppy in the window, and we should be pushing for better education on the subject, not placating those that may disagree with such half minded statements.
