Please give us a short summary of your website?
Our website features premium DVD videos on just about every topic you would need for your dog or puppy.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I am a disabled veteran and a lover of dogs. I wanted to find something dog related I could do from home and at the same time provide a service for other dog lovers.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
In 2005 I launched http://www.galenaaussies.com - our website on Miniature Australian Shepherds, which we breed.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I wanted something that sounded good and would be easy to remember. We sell dog dvds so naturally Doggy DVD was perfect.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
We have videos that are exclusive to Doggy DVD and cannot be found elsewhere. An example is our Live Puppy Whelping DVD.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
This is a great hobby and it makes me happy just to provide a service to potential dog owners to people with several. I plan on running it for years.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
The design and updating takes quite a bit time and I do it all myself. I have no formal training so my success isn't based on income to time spent, but rather keeping it up and running.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would hire designers and get some flash items for the site. Maybe also an interactive chat forum on dogs.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes. This is a hobby for me as I am a disabled veteran. I would love to spend more time with people looking for quality dog information.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Nothing really unexpected but the time it takes to get listed on the search engines is long and takes a lot of contiuous work.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Trying to maintain Google rankings. I am on the first page some times and then cannot be found.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Google Adwords has brought a lot of traffic in but it can be costly.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It takes a bit of time to get the orders shipped out but I manage to do them all daily so our customers get their DVDs fast.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
Doggy DVD has been fully functioning for about a year and the site will remain up as the products we carry will always be available.
What is your favorite breed of dog?
Miniature Australian Shepherds! Although I love all dogs and am a proud supporter of The Humane Socitey and the ASPCA to benifit all animals, I have become addicted to our Mini Aussies. They are very smart and loyal friends. Our Mini Aussie website is http://www.galenaaussies.com
