European Legacy Dobermans Interview

By Interviewer at 02/19/09 11:12

Name of your website?

European Legacy Dobermans

Your name?

Elina Redburn

Your Location (city, etc)

Phoenix, AZ

Please give us a short summary of your website?

European Legacy Dobermans are well-muscled dogs with good limb-angulations, larger bone-structure, deep and wide chest and beautifully shaped heads. These dogs were chosen from vigorously health tested parents with excellent test results and pedigrees that had shown to be genetically superior in longevity and health. We were searching for Dobermans genetically predisposed as Schutzhund and protection prospects, driven, confident, stable and loyal.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

I have owned Dobermans for a long time, but a few years ago decided to seriously breed them.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

It was my personal website, where I put a lot of family pictures.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

The name of the kennel is European Legacy Dobermans. We are breeding only 100 percent European stock.

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

There are very breeders in the US who are seriously breeding European dobermans. We are trying to pay especial attention to the health issues of the breed.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

European Legacy Kennel has a single mission in mind, to reintroduce the reigning class of European working Doberman to both the Western US and America as a whole. We devoted many hours of research and study both from the internet and many volumes of Russian and American publications on the Doberman. The fact that we speak fluent Russian as well as English and some German aided us greatly in this research. The online availability to trace bloodlines as well as to view generation upon generation of linage through photos has enabled us to reduce what would once have taken decades of travel, research and connections to be accomplished in a matter of months. We were very careful and calculated about choosing our breeding stock.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

It takes a lot of time to produce a good quality bloodlines, however I believe that we are on the way to success

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

Not much. Maybe added a forum that would have addressed the isuues of the doberman breed.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

We will try to handle the success.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

I am not sure. Breeding dogs is a very rewarding occupation.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The health issues of the breed is probably the most challenging one. When I purchased my first Doberman in Russia in 1996, nobody heard about the cardio problems of the Doberman breed. The artificial isolation of the Russian Doberman population during the Soviet era produced a robust working type dogs with a life expectancy of 13-15 years. To improve and refine the stock, some Dobermans were imported from Western Europe in the end of the 80’s and some of the Russian dams were mated with some of dogs abroad. These efforts did produce a more correct and sound type, but unfortunately some of the health issues unknown before nowadays can be found in the Russian dobermans as well.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Submitting it to the search engines.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

There are a lot of pages to be created to each dog in our kennel. Pedigrees, pictures... a lot of work

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

For a couple of years.

What would you recommend to your customers?

It is never wise to just rush out and buy the first cute Doberman puppy that catches your eye. Whether you wish for a dog to show, to compete in obedience or agility, or just a family dog, you need to invest some time investigating your puppy's background and early care, as it will determine the dog's future health and temperament. This time and investigation into the Doberman Pinscher background will save you hundreds and thousand of dollars in future vet's bills and will insure you that your dog is free from nervousness and fear-biting that may occur in some representatives of this breed due to unscrupulous breeding.

What is your website address?
