Q&A: Cat liter box problems

By Blog Answers at 01/15/09 06:09

On 12/15/08 14:18, jane patterson asked the following question:

my cats continue to poop on the floor in spite of cleaning out their litter box . This is happening to my 85 year old friend and she is really getting exasperated. She thinks she has to get rid of her cats and they are her "boys". Any suggestions

The best thing to do is maybe change up the litter brand. If they don't like that brand they won't use it. If they are still using the floor, move the box to a more private place. They also don't like the box by their food or sleeping area. Just change things up a little bit.

Answer #2 On 01/14/09 16:44, ##PRpets-Jessica_3-Jessica (3) from Burmingham, AL##PR answered:

Cats will stop using the litter box for several reasons.  First of all have the cats checked by the vet.  There may be a health problem that is causing the litter box aversion.

If they come back with a clean bill of health consider the location of the litter box.  Cats prefer to use the potty out of heavy traffic areas.  They like their privacy too!  They also may not like the litter.  Some cats prefer gravel type litter while others like the sandy clumping kind.  Some may not like the smell of the box so consider using shredded newspaper.

Also, there may not be enough litter boxes in the house.  Make sure that there aren't too many cats and too few litter boxes.  Try these things and see if they work.  If not, the cats may have deeper emotional reasons for not using the box and may require some retraining.
